Penny nears return to Dodgers' rotation
The Los Angeles Dodgers' starting rotation is getting healthier in time for the stretch drive.
Brad Penny is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list and start the opener of a three-game weekend series at San Francisco on Friday.
Penny has been sidelined since June 17 with right shoulder tendinitis and bursitis.
He allowed two runs on six hits over four innings in his lone rehabilitation start on Sunday for triple-A Las Vegas.
Penny, 30, won 16 games each of the previous two seasons and was third in Cy Young Award balloting in 2007 as the National League's top pitcher.
He has struggled this season with a 5-9 record and 5.88 earned-run average in 15 starts.
Losers of two straight, the Dodgers entered play against St. Louis Thursday with a 56-57 mark, 2½ games behind first-place Arizona in the NL West division.
