Mickey Renaud, captain of the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League, died suddenly on Monday.
Renaud, a native of Tecumseh, Ont., was 19 years old.
Dr. Roy Diklich, the team physician, said in a statement that Renaud "suddenly collapsed at his Tecumseh home and was transported to Windsor Regional Hospital with absent vital signs. All attempts were made at resuscitation and were unsuccessful at the emergency room."
Ontario Provincial Police in Tecumseh planned to conduct an autopsy later on Monday.
Spitfires general manager Warren Rychel called Renaud's death "the biggest tragedy in Spitfire history.
"Words alone cannot describe our pain at this time," said Rychel.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Renaud family during this most difficult time," added Windsor coach Bob Boughner.
Renaud, a fifth round pick of the Calgary Flames in the 2007 NHL draft, was in his third season with the Spitfires.
He had 21 goals and 41 points in 56 games with Windsor this season.
